Thankfulness Abounds Where Love Surrounds

 Okay, I know that's a totally cheesy title.
But sometimes I'm a totally cheesy girl.
:)

The other day on my Facebook page I posted these lyrics:

Great is Thy faithfulness
Great is Thy faithfulness
Morning by morning new mercies I see
All I have needed Thy hand hath provided
Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord unto me

Today, and every day, I am thankful for a
God who loves me in spite of myself.

 But I am also thankful for this handful of mixed nuts...I love them all:

That picture hangs on the wall in my folks' living room.

These are my folks...for whom I am also thankful.

I hope you have many things to be thankful for...
today and every day.

I do...but these are the best. :)

Happy Thanksgiving from my family to yours!

DIY Jewelry Holder Displays

Hey hey Hey!
Man...sorry I've been MIA...
it just gets crazy around here this time of year!
And I'm armpit deep in the secret project...
but it's coming along nicely.

In the meantime...here's an awesome way to
not only store all your fabulous adornments...
but also to showcase some of your favorites!

Some DIY Jewelry Holders or Displays!

I started with a fancy 8 X 10 frame from HobLob for 1/2 off...
some scrap wood {as yet undecided at picture time}...
and some knobs, also from HobLob, on clearance!!!

I measured my sheet of tin to fit the back of the frame
and just marked it off with a Sharpie.
Yes, my Sharpie is pink.
What of it?

This sheet is 12" by 24" so I measured in such a way that I
could actually get 3 this size out of this sheet if I decided to make more.
That actually cuts the cost if you consider you can make 3 gifts with one sheet.

Tin snips are a must for this job.
Makes it so easy.
Just snip, snip, snip...and you're done!

Next it was time for paint.
Never forget it!

We had some gold spray paint...and it was rather SHINY...
to detract from that a bit, I held a can of Oil Rubbed Bronze over
the frame and lightly sprayed so it speckled the gold.
Poifect.

Well, almost.
I decided a little more depth was in order.
I lightly wiped on some chalk paint...{the pic below}
distressed a little...speckled some more with gold, then ORB...
then I finally put a top coat on.
Layers, layers, layers.

Once it was all dry, I glued the tin sheet into the
back of the frame with some E6000 glue
You want it to sit down in the recess of the frame
so there's a space for your hooks to hang.

What hooks, you say?
These hooks, of course.
Well, and all those long, dangly French hook
earrings you've been known to wear.

These are pretty small...about 3/4" to an inch long.
They came 6 to a pack.
I opened them up just a tad so they could easily hang on the
tin sheet and hold rings or big earrings or thin bangles.

Then they got a healthy dose of gold spray paint.

Next is the knobby necklace holder.
Here's my piece of scrap wood.
This piece is a 1 X 3 cut to about the same width as the frame.

I wanted 3 knobs on here,
so I measured them out so they'd be even.
Then drill a hole all the way through big enough
to fit the screw of your knob.

Next, use a forstner bit to make a shallow
hole on the back side of your board.
Be careful that you only go about half way through!

Like this, see?
The reason is, since we're using knobs,
they have a nut on the back to hold it on.
You don't want that nut sticking out the back
once you've put the knob on, right?
Of course not!

All that's left is to paint it your heart's desire...add your knobs...

and VOILA!

I spray painted the wood first with the same color as the tin sheet.
Then I used chalk paint so I could distress it
and have a little of the plum show through.

I don't know about you, but I just love how they turned out!

Because of the holes I drilled in the back of the board,
I was able to just hang it on some small nails.
You could attach hangers, or even use Command Strips I suppose.

Here's a closer look at the final finish on the paint.
Kind of antique-y, don't ya think?

And here's a better look at those nice little hooks...
they're great for hoops, bracelets, and even rings.

Whaddya think?
Did you just add one to your Christmas list?
For you or someone else?
I certainly hope the person I made
these for likes them as much as I do!
{see them in their final home here}

It was a pretty quick project.
The longest part is waiting for the paint to dry.

Well, off I go, back to work on my to do list

Hope you guys have a wonderful weekend!

Dinner With Linda ~ Chili with Pork and Black Beans

I know you've seen a lot of recipes here lately...
I am up to my eyeballs in stuff to do.
I just got back from vacation...which was FABULOUS!
And now I'm feeling the pressure of the holidays weighing down...

I have several projects in the works...
but most are big and nothing I can really give progress on.
So, please bear with me...some good things are coming your way!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Today we are continuing our mini series with...
She's been sharing some yummy pork recipes for your dinnertime enjoyment.
************
You can do so much with pork, you can have it roasted, fried, or other things.
Here are some recipes that you will enjoy.
Ingredients:
  • One half cup of vegetable oil
  • Two medium yellow onion, peeled and chopped
  • Five garlic cloves
  • Two and a half boneless pork butt, cut into half cubes
  • One third cup of chili powder
  • One tablespoon of ground cumin
  • One tablespoon of oregano
  • One tablespoon of thyme
  • One fourth teaspoon of cayenne pepper
  • One teaspoon of salt
  • Two cups of plum tomatoes
  • Three cups of vegetable broth
  • Two cups of black beans
What you need:
Heat some olive oil in a large pan. Add the onions and garlic. Cook until it is tender for twenty minutes.
Heat the remaining tablespoons of olive oil in a casserole on medium heat. Place the pork and cook for fifteen minutes.
Place the chili powder, cumin, oregano, cayenne, and salt. Stir for about two minutes. Add the onions and garlic, tomatoes and vegetable broth. Bring it to a boil until the pork is tender, about one and a half hours.
Stir the beans into the chili and let the sauce simmer for ten minutes. Serve and enjoy!
Butterscotch Brownies and a Gift Bag Tutorial
Hey hey! It's finally here!!!
A couple of weeks ago, I was honored to guest post over at Skip to my Lou.
Well, today I'm going to share those Butterscotch Brownies with you guys!
Be excited!
Be very excited!
Goodness, gracious these are good.
We've been making these in my family for years!
Can I tell you what my family actually calls them?
Crack brownies.
Yep.
They're that addicting...so be warned.
Of course, with any good recipe,
it helps to round up all your ingredients first!
That way you know if you're out of something so you can find a substitute.
For these brownies, you need to melt your butterscotch morsels
and butter over a water bath on the stove.
If you have a double boiler...fantastic!
If not, do the next best thing:
place a metal mixing bowl over a saucepan with a couple inches
of water and you, too, can achieve melted morsel goodness.
The water should be boiling softly, simmering really.
See? Almost ready!
Stir it around to help it melt and mix more evenly.
Do NOT be alarmed if it looks like this when you
take it off the stove and stir in your brown sugar...
Because once it cools and you start mixing...it turns to spun gold, baby!
Be careful not to over bake...these tend to look gooey in the center...
you'll be tempted to keep adding a few minutes.
Resist, my friend, resist.
I know this from experience.
I actually should have taken these out about 3 minutes earlier than I did.
Oh well...they were still soft and delicious.
This mix is easy to give...
especially in an easy to make fabric gift bag.
Once you bag your dry ingredients, fold your fabric lengthwise
and measure the width of your bags.  Add an inch or so to each side.
Cut so that when you sew the sides,
the bottom is the fold in the fabric and the top is open.
To keep it simple, just cut the open end in a zigzag pattern.
It doesn't even have to be perfect.
Fold so that the right sides are together,
sew up the sides, leaving the top open.
Turn your bag right side out...and fill with your bags of dry ingredients.
For these brownies, there are 3 dry components:
1. Brown Sugar
2. The flour, salt, and baking powder.
3. Butterscotch Morsels
Include a printout of the instructions inside the bag.
Tie it all up with a pretty tag and some twine...you've got a great hostess gift.
 Butterscotch Brownies
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 – 11.5 oz pkg butterscotch morsels
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • ½ cup {1 stick} butter
  • 1 ½ tsp salt
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 tsp real vanilla
  • 1 cup chopped nuts {optional ~ I never put nuts in mine, my mom always puts nuts in hers}
Preheat oven to 350°. Combine dry ingredients, set aside.
Melt morsels and butter in a double boiler; remove from heat and transfer to a large bowl.
Stir in brown sugar; cool 5 min. Beat in eggs and vanilla. Blend in flour mixture.
Stir in nuts {optional}. Spread evenly into greased 13x9x2 pan.
Bake 30-35 minutes (check at 30). Cool and Cut.
For thinner brownies...15x10x1 pan, bake 25-30 minutes.
Oh, and I am not to be held responsible if you
suddenly become butterscotch brownie dependent.
Just sayin'.
Alrighty then...
you guys be good and safe on Halloween!
Check your candy and brush your teeth!
BTW...what candy do you steal from your kids' stash?
And which ones will NOBODY eat?
A Hint of Halloween Hoopla
Ah, yes...once again I'm late to the party.
Nothing new here.
I added a few Halloween touches to the fall living room.
I didn't put everything out, as we'll be traveling over Halloween this year.
Didn't make sense to haul it all out of the basement...
but I wanted to share what I did get out.
Isn't this little "pillow" just so cute?
I can't even remember where I got it.
Big surprise. :)
I picked up these awesome paper fans/medallions, whatever they are,
when we were in Minnesota last month for some family business.
They have this freakin' AWESOME nursery called Gerten's.
I could spend hours there.
And they always have the coolest seasonal decor.
I actually found a couple crows at the dollar store.
And they still had some feathers on them.
Bonus!
Since I have the barnwood flower box on the coffee table this year,
I had to figure out where to put this little runner.
Okay, not the best place, but it works this year.
I usually use that big honkin' bowl above for trick or treat candy.
These little smiling jack-o-lantern faces make me happy.
This polka dot witch hat is still a favorite.
Argh...this guy turned out so blurry!
I found him at HomeGoods...I think he needs a name.
Any suggestions?
I was trying, and not succeeding, to get a decent shot of
the boo blocks with the creepy red-eyed bat hanging behind them.
Oh well.
I hung the banner that was on the fireplace last year here in the dining room.
I am loving adding fun things to the top of my dresser.
Someday...I'll get it painted.
Someday.
The vinyl for the subway art came from Landee on Etsy.
Some of her designs you can just get the vinyl and make the board yourself.
That's what I did here.
Aaaaand...that's all, folks!
I didn't even get out my big ceramic pumpkin my dad gave me.
It has a flickering bulb so it's super cool!
Next year...next year.
Hope you guys have been scaring up
some fun around your favorite haunts.
I pushed off the post with the gift bag so I could share some
Halloween with you...but it's on the schedule early next week.
Promise.
So...make sure you come back and see me!
Have a great weekend!!!!
Oh...I almost forgot!!!
There are just a few more days to enter the GIANT baking bundle giveaway!
AaaaaAaaaH!
